McKewon: Nebraska’s defense rediscovered its edge on an ugly Big Ten West Friday night

CHAMPAIGN lll – Matt Rhule stuck his fac into a husker huddle for one more pep talk. Nebraska’s offense had just screwed again. NU’s defense had to deal with it too.

The Rhule aske DO you love the guy who fumbled? Trying to appeal to the defense’s loyalty.

That’s when they told me to get out of the huddle, Rhyle said the husker’s 20-7win at illinois. we got this.

And they did. They had it. Three fourth down stops. Two takesaways. and on long red strip that ran all the way up the lower bleachrs at memorial stadium. Nebraska fans, yelling full throat. on the road during a key third down. For the Huskers defense.

Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer threw the ball. He had a guy open. NU lineback chief borders stuck up a hand and batted down the pass.

IN a big ten west battle of stubbed toes, missed field goals, injury timeouts and second half gaffes, the huskers were able to survive their miscues and stumble into a bye week with a 3-3 record, reasonable hope of a bowl berth and an outside shot at winning its division. Their breakfast will taste pretty good saturday.

Here’s why: They have a defense. Even if Deshon singleton and Luke Reimer are banged up. Even after Michigan snatched their heart for a week. They came back with hard practices and a pulse. Just like Rhule hoped when, with his jaw jutting and his eyes on fire, he set the mod and the tone earlier in the week.

We are a defensive football team, HE said. The defense has to learn that we’re a defensive football team.

No days or nights off. No drives whre, hey maybe it’s cool to a cut a corner and play with lousy leverage or have your eyes in the wrong place. He put NU through a physical sunday night practice to prove his point. Not sure every Husker loved it. Not sure the offense got a lot out of it, based on the tenor of their comments and the quality of their play in the second half, when they failed to finish off the illini and frankly appeared exhausted.

Husker Report Card: Grading Nebraska’s performance against Illinois

Here are the grades coming out of the game against Illinois.

RUN OFFENSE

It was more of what Nebraska wants to do.

Quarterback Heinrich Haarberg kept the ball, finished runs with a dropped shoulder and scored on a 25-yard scamper in the first half.

Anthony Grant got the ball in space on the option and found the end zones as well. He went out with an injury in the fourth quarter but returned soon after.

C : GRADE

Pass Offense

Nebraska stretched the field more than it did in previous weeks.

Haarberg connected with Marcus washington for a 39-yard gain early, Then hit Ty Hahn for a 21-yard gain on third down to setup the Husker’s first touchdown in the second quarter, a welcome sight for an offense that has lacked explosive plays.

The consistency wasn’t there, but Harrberg showed the potential to develop into a more well-rounded quarterback. Here made a few throws on the run and from awkward arm angles.

There were also balls that could have interceptions.

The passing game as a whole remains a work in progress.

Grade: C

OVER ALL

It was far from perfect, but Nebraska put together on of its most complete performances to beat its first conference opponent of the year.

Like its win over Northern Illinois three weeks ago, the way NU won followed the blueprint it set for itself before the season.

The Huskers beat Illinois by winning the special teams battle, possessing the ball and dominating the trenches on both sides of the ball.

For a program with a coach in his first year, It was another step forward.

Grade:B
